The domestic donkeys belong to the horse-family and come from the African donkey, but otherwise they don’t have much in common with horses:
Donkeys cannot neigh, but they scream louder and have longer ears.
The mostly grey fur of donkeys is decorated with a standing mane and a slender, dark dorsal stripe.
Horses have a short tail with long hair, donkeys have a long tail that ends with a tassel.
In stressful situations donkeys do not show escape behavior like horses, but remain standing. Because donkeys come from mountainous regions, in which a headless escape would be deadly. If one wants to drive a stressed donkey with blows, then this behavior is still strengthened. Hence the reputation of the donkeys to be stubborn.
Donkeys can carry big loads and are very sure-footed also in rough terrain. A donkey can run up to 50 km/h fast.
In the original habitat of the donkeys in the desert-edge-areas of Africa, the nourishment-behavior was adapted to barren feed. Donkeys therefore tend to eat what they can get, resulting in severe colic and obesity in nutrient-rich oversupply. Therefore, dear visitors, please do not feed if you love donkeys!
While the domesticated species are increasing, the original wild form in Africa is threatened with extinction. There are less than a thousand wild donkeys in a thin strip from Egypt to the Horn of Africa!
