Wildcats are a species within the family of cats, which are living in Europe (European wildcats), Africa and Asia in various subspecies.
In Germany the European wildcat is classified as a “species of responsibility” within the Federal Government’s National Strategy for Biological Diversity. In 2018 it was nominated “Animal of the Year”.
The degree of hybridisation is important for the classification of the endangerment of the wildcat. If the expanding wildcat population mixes too much with domestic cats, there is a danger that the wildcats will gradually disappear genetically.
European wildcats are considered to be untamable. As probable direct descendant of our domestic cats, the African wildcat is regarded. It was tamed in ancient Egypt and was considered a sacred animal.
Wildcats are extremely shy, avoid human closeness and never return to hiding places discovered by humans. Like most cat species, they lead a mainly solitary life and are mostly sedentary. When hunting it lies in wait for prey, then catches it by executing a few leaps, which can span three metres. Wild cats are mostly active during the day, in more densely populated areas they are more active at night. The size of their home ranges depends on the prey they have on offer and can therefore vary greatly from region to region.
The mating season runs from January to March. The gestation period is about 9 weeks. In a safe hiding place the female gives birth mostly to 2 to 4 kittens. With approximately 6 – 8 months, the kittens look for its own territory.
