The meerkat or suricate is a small carnivoran in the mongoose family. Meerkats are day-active animals. They like to sunbathe near their caves or dig underground in search of food.
Meerkats are very social animals. They like to cuddle very close to each other to keep body contact. The colony takes care of sick or injured meerkats and grants these animals special protection.
The close cohesion of the group ensures their survival. While a part of the animals is busy digging under the ground, other animals are responsible for the “securing”. The latter stand on their hind legs and look out for enemies. If carnivores or other enemies approach, alarm is struck immediately by barking. Then, all meerkats hurry to come fast into the protecting caves.
Meerkats possess a distinctive sense of smell.
Another representative of the mongoose family are the banded mongooses, which you can observe a few enclosures away.
