The white stork has only a weak voice. It communicates by bill-clattering. Clattering is to the greeting of the partner at the nest and to the defense against nest-competitors. Also in the mating season, one rattles extensively. The stork becomes sexually mature with approximately one year. Its large stick nest high above the ground can reach a weight of 50 kg up to 2 tons. The breeding period lasts 30 – 32 days. Here the partners alternate. The nestlings spend approx. 58 – 64 days in the nest. The white-stork is a migratory bird, that travels long distances between its brood-quarters and its winter-quarters in Africa and south of the Sahara annually. The White Stork is a glider that uses warm updrafts to migrate. Since little thermals develop above the water, the white stork flies around the Mediterranean Sea in order to reach Africa.
